Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa
The national museum of New Zealand. When you visit a country and go to the national museum you expect to pay a fee to enter right? Not with Te Papa. This is probably one of if not the best tourist attractions in Wellington, there are two cafes inside, enough exhibits inside to last you more than a couple of days, free wi-fi and a locker system. Whether you have just arrived in Wellington or want a few hours to kill before your flight outside of Wellington, Te Papa is a good option.
Mt Victoria Lookout
If you feel like being active on your holiday/visit to Wellington then the Mt Victoria Lookout is your go-to. There are a couple of hikes around Wellington you can do but they’re a bit longer than your average joe would consider, at least with the walk up Mt Victoria it doesn’t take long and you’re rewarded when you get to the top. I don’t mean someone giving you a medal type reward but after 45 mins to an hour of walking depending on your pace, you are greeted at the top with panoramic views of Wellington.
Parliament Building Tours
If you’re ever curious about the giant building in Wellington that looks like a beehive then you’re in luck because they offer FREE guided tours of New Zealand’s Parliament Buildings. You get to learn about the politics going on inside and even the earthquake strength with the base isolators being part of the tour.
Wellington Botanic Gardens
Wellington is blessed with being surrounded by a lot of nature and among that nature is the Botanic Gardens in Thorndon. The beautiful garden stretches for 25 hectares which are free to explore, there are many areas to find with multiple lookouts spread around. If you’re visiting in the summertime, the gardens play host to a number of free gigs at the soundshell. Just one of the many things the gardens have to offer.
Wellington Cable Car
You know when you see a beautiful view of a city and wonder what it would be like if you viewed it from the other side. Well damn, say no more. Wellington’s iconic Cable Car, which takes off from Lambton Quay in the CBD takes you to the very top of the Botanic Gardens to a lookout of Wellington but also the Cable Top Eatery where you can enjoy lunch and coffee or even a cheeky drink.
