Four construction sites are working tirelessly on the new Te Ara Tupua seawall, a vital project that will protect the coastline between Ngauranga and Petone while also providing a scenic path for walkers and cyclists. The project is making significant headway, with over 1,195 out of 6,700 uniquely designed “X” shaped concrete blocks already in place. These blocks, along with a whopping 55,000 tonnes of rock, will form the backbone of this robust coastal defense.
But the seawall is more than just a protective barrier. It’s a testament to the commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural heritage. As part of the project’s environmental compensation, the team is planting giant kelp, restoring dunes, and even creating special concrete tide pools. The X-blocks themselves, dubbed “Te Ripowai” by local iwi artist Len Hetet, are designed with intricate patterns to encourage the growth of marine plants, enhancing the local ecosystem.
The unique X-shaped design of the blocks, known as XBlocPlus, isn’t just for show. This innovative design minimizes the seawall’s environmental impact and offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional rock revetments. Notably, Te Ara Tupua is the first project to incorporate earthquake resilience into the design of these blocks, ensuring the seawall’s strength and durability in the face of seismic activity.
The collaboration with Len Hetet adds another layer of significance to the project. The intricate patterns on the blocks are inspired by the concept of “rippling water,” reflecting the interconnectedness of land and sea. This artistic touch not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the seawall but also serves a practical purpose, providing vital habitat for marine life.
Hetet’s words beautifully capture the essence of the project: “We must keep the ripples occurring speaks of the water living to which the land reciprocates. We as guardians must keep the ripples occurring if we do not and the water becomes still then life will cease to exist.”
