Crucial feedback from prominent Wellingtonians and property Titan Ian Cassels, who at times takes the undeserved abuse for the streets problems, is that Courtney Place cannot deal with any more road closures or clipboard-carrying- LGWM consultants, slowly and un decisively deciding what to do with the street.
Locals say it “just needs a pause”, a break, and it needs time to recover. Courtney place has its natural flow, has its own style, vibe and Courtney people that feed in and out of it, are naturally there.
Some say it will recover over 2,3 + years naturally, like Cuba mall came of age, or it can recover with some positive focused energy, that will come from within, from the local communities.
Given, it looks tired and the footpaths ghastly. One highly visable issue is the homeless people, who are part of the city’s fabric, that needs a solution. There’s just been so many people trying to tinker with it, and change it slightly over time that its core principle of a “fun entertainment precinct” has been lost.
Wellington can’t do without Courtney Place. When you ask any cruise ship visitors, what have you been up to after the cable car, WETA CAVE or Mount Victoria, there is nothing. Why can’t Courtney Place to do a pub crawl or a historic building tour, a gin and tonic tour or a Wellington craft beer tour?
There are so many good aspects. Courtney Place could become a positive value proposition by changing the current narrative set by MSM, being it’s a dirty dive of dens of inequity and that needs to change. That narrative being driven by mainstream media is incredibly damaging, and the writer of this piece is frustrated at the lack of remorse or understanding of the power and damage that MSM can have to a street like this.
The Post and Stuff have their foot on Courtney Place’s throat, and that’s where they appear to love it. It’s time for Courtney Place to push back, to understand its value proposotion again, in the Welly ecosystem, right on the edge of Tearo, New Zealand’s fastest-growing suburb. Cuba Mall has got it together, and so will Courtney Place rise from the ashes once again.
