“Could Featherston, nestled at the base of the Remutaka hill, be the unsuspecting gateway for this dangerous imposter drug infiltrating Wellington? Given its proximity to the city and relative anonymity, it’s a chilling hypothesis that warrants further investigation”.
High Alert, New Zealand’s drug watchdog, has issued a warning about a dangerous imposter lurking in the illicit drug scene. A substance mimicking ketamine, known as 2-Fluoro-2-Oxo-PCE (or 2F-NENDCK/CanKet), has been found in Wellington, disguised as the popular party drug. However, this wolf in sheep’s clothing delivers a far different experience than the expected “k-hole.”
Users report a harrowing journey with this imposter drug, experiencing a prolonged and intense dissociative state, strong visual disturbances, disorientation, nausea, and a stark absence of ketamine’s typically euphoric or introspective effects. The effects of this dangerous substitute can last up to 4-6 hours, a stark contrast to the fleeting nature of a genuine ketamine experience.
The substance is believed to be widespread in Wellington, and possibly lurking in other regions, prompting High Alert to issue a stern warning and recommendation. They urge anyone using ketamine to get their drugs tested before use, as the counterfeit substance is nearly indistinguishable from the real deal. Drug-checking services are readily available across New Zealand through KnowYourStuffNZ, the New Zealand Drug Foundation, and the New Zealand Needle Exchange Programme, with upcoming clinic information on The Level website.
This alarming discovery serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks of dabbling in the illicit drug market. Even familiar substances can harbor hidden dangers. Stay safe, get your drugs tested, and prioritize your well-being.
