Dougal Dunlop is 71
Has taught thousands of kids to swim and continues to enter the harbour every morning at around 7am, rain, shine or southerly he will be there.
He helped open TAWA pool back in the day and has been teaching since he was 14, initially at the boys and girls institute pool up in Te Aro and now at Freyberg pool.
Dougal is a terrific Wellingtonian and inspires so many with his calm and purposeful energy and commitment to others.
When I asked if WCC had put up a statue for him at TAWA pool he said Nah, not interested in that stuff. Just want to help people have fun and be safe un the water.
Others say he is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. He is now teaching the kids of parents he taught to swim.
