Back in 2020, Samuel Marsden School in Whitby was on its knees, facing closure and a quiet end. The community turned to John Fiso, a giant in business with a passion for helping others, pleading with him to step in. He didn’t just rescue it—he transformed it into Whitby College. Five years on, in March 2025, it’s a shining success. Every student secures a university place, 74% of Year 12 and 13 pupils earn Merit or Excellence grades, and 100% pass their NCEA in those years. They’re home to some of New Zealand’s brightest ICAS Maths talents too. From a struggling 100 pupils, the school’s grown to 360, guided by 25 dedicated teachers.
This is no ordinary school. It’s vibrant, forward-thinking, and woven into the fabric of the community. Locals love hearing the lively chatter of kids learning and growing just down the road. The school’s excelling in sports as well, clinching regional titles in softball, golf, three-on-three basketball, equestrian, volleyball, and basketball. Last year, they raised the bar higher, winning three national banners for three-on-three, golf, and softball. At first, fewer than 2% of students hailed from Titahi Bay or Porirua. Now, 20% are Māori or Pacific Island—ten times more than any other college in New Zealand. John Fiso’s the driving force, personally funding dozens of scholarships to open doors for these kids, showing his unwavering commitment to this corner of Wellington.
The community can’t stop singing its praises. One resident beams, saying it’s wonderful to hear the children laughing and enjoying themselves. Another calls Mr Fiso a genius—kind, genuine, and inspiring. A mum shares how her daughter’s leapt forward, now leading the family in ways they never imagined. It’s a brilliant showcase of what a school can do when led with vision and care—John Fiso’s made Whitby College a cornerstone that’s brought this community closer, lifting everyone up.
