Is Wellington’s Weather Really That Bad?
I love Wellington. I’ve lived here long enough to know exactly how wild our weather can be — and I’ve yelled “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!” into the wind more times than I care to admit.
But is it the worst capital city to live in because of the weather? That’s a big claim. Let’s talk honestly, from someone who actually lives here.
The Wind Is a Whole Personality
Wellington doesn’t just have wind — it has Wind™. You don’t really walk here; you lean into it and hope for the best. I’ve seen café chairs fly, skirts betray their owners, and people literally hold onto poles while crossing the street.
And yeah, it can be exhausting. Some days it feels like the wind is trying to pick a fight.
But strangely… we kind of love it? It’s part of what makes Wellington feel alive. There’s something weirdly energizing about walking along the waterfront with your hair in chaos and your jacket flapping like a cape. It’s dramatic — in a good way (most days).
Rain? It’s Not the Soaking That Gets You
It rains often here, but it’s not usually heavy. It’s more that sneaky sideways mist that shows up without warning and somehow finds its way under your umbrella, into your shoes, and behind your neck.

You just learn to roll with it. Carry a jacket. Always keep a spare pair of socks. And don’t even bother with cheap umbrellas — they’ll die a fast, tragic death.
Now, Let’s Talk About the Not-So-Pretty Side
We can’t pretend it’s all quirky charm. The weather here does cause real problems. Wet roads, low visibility, and sudden gusts of wind make driving dangerous. I’ve seen far too many near-misses at intersections or heard sirens during rush hour storms.
Traffic? A nightmare when the weather turns. The city wasn’t really built for this many cars, and when rain hits, everyone’s on edge. Accidents are common. So yeah — commuting in bad weather here can be a real test of patience and nerves.
The Earthquake Thing
Okay, it’s not weather, but it’s part of life here. We’re on a fault line. Most of us have a “go-bag,” we’ve felt a few rumbles in the night, and yes — it can be scary. But we’re prepared. And the community here? Unshakable (pun only slightly intended).

But Then the Sun Comes Out…
And when it does, it’s magic. The wind calms down, the harbour sparkles, and everyone comes out like sunflowers. People jog along Oriental Bay. Kids feed seagulls on the waterfront. There’s music, laughter, and that rare, perfect Wellington afternoon that makes you forget every storm that came before it.
Why We Stay (And Why We Love It Anyway)
Because Wellington is more than its weather. It’s Cuba Street’s weird and wonderful energy. It’s the barista who knows your order and your dog’s name. It’s the cozy bookshops, the late-night theatre shows, and the view from Mount Victoria that makes you feel like you’re in a painting.
Yes, it’s not always easy here. The wind howls, the rain sneaks up, and sometimes traffic feels like a war zone. But there’s heart in this city — and if you can handle the weather, you’ll find a life that’s full of colour, creativity, and connection.
Worst capital to live in? Maybe if you’re only looking at the forecast. But if you’re looking for soul — Wellington wins, hands down.
