A Sporting Icon for Wellington

Jim Wana has put Wellington on the global sports map! As a former New Zealand Softball representative, he played a key role in winning the 1984 ISF Junior Men’s World Championship and the ISF Men’s World Championship in 2004. Notably, as the winning pitcher in the championship game, he secured a historic victory for Wellington and the nation. Later, he transitioned into coaching, becoming the pitching coach for the Black Sox staff. Under his guidance, the team won a silver medal in 2009 and a gold medal in 2017, working alongside head coaches Eddie Kohlhase and Mark Sorenson. Due to his dominance in North American club softball and remarkable contributions to the sport, he earned a place in the ISC World Hall of Fame in 2019.

Jim Wana, also known as Jim Wana-Ariki in older records, was inducted into the International Softball Congress (ISC) Hall of Fame alongside his 2004 Black Sox teammate Patrick Shannon. This prestigious honor took place during the ISC Hall of Fame annual breakfast and induction ceremony in Denmark, Wisconsin.

A Legacy in International Softball

Originally from Wellington, Wana made a lasting impact on international softball. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he pitched for the powerhouse Penn Corp teams of Sioux City, Iowa. Over the years, he was recognized as an All-World pitcher three times (1987, 1988, 1996). Furthermore, he won the prestigious Leroy Zimmerman Award in 1988 at just 19 years old. His achievements include four ISC World Tournament titles (1988–1992) and a runner-up finish in 1990. Additionally, he led Penn Corp ASA to national championship victories in 1989, 1990, and 1992, earning the ASA MVP pitcher award in 1990. Eventually, he concluded his ISC career with Broken Bow, Nebraska, at the 1997 ISC World Tournament.
