Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my thoughts regarding the appointment of Matt Prosser as the new Chief Executive of the Wellington City Council (WCC). The announcement has certainly caught my attention, given Mr. Prosser’s extensive background and the responsibilities he will shoulder in leading our city through a critical period of transition.
According to the WCC’s announcement, Mr. Prosser brings three decades of experience in local government, including his current role as the Chief Executive of Dorset Council in the United Kingdom, which serves 380,000 residents with a workforce of nearly 5000 employees. His career highlights demonstrate leadership in implementing innovative approaches and fostering strong teams, making him a fitting choice to helm WCC during this transformative time.
Mayor Tory Whanau’s emphasis on Mr. Prosser’s commitment to community outcomes, innovation, and resilience is noteworthy. She highlighted Wellington’s ongoing projects, including upgrading water infrastructure, enhancing public spaces, advancing climate action, and evolving the transport network—all amidst economic challenges. These are no small tasks, and having a leader with Mr. Prosser’s expertise seems promising.
Mr. Prosser himself expressed his enthusiasm for the role, citing his fondness for Wellington, its rich culture, natural beauty, and its people. His intentions to immerse himself in our community—whether by enjoying our bush trails, supporting local hospitality, or cheering on our Hurricanes and Poua—reflect a genuine willingness to become part of the fabric of Wellington life.
That said, it is also essential to acknowledge the weight of expectations placed on him. Wellingtonians will hope to see tangible outcomes, not only plans and promises. Given his tenure and accolades, including his role as President of SOLACE UK and his work with Dorset Council, there is reason to remain optimistic. However, the success of this leadership will ultimately be measured by the results delivered for our community.
This appointment also marks the conclusion of Barbara McKerrow’s five-year term in March 2025, after what I assume has been a period of significant contributions to WCC. As Mr. Prosser transitions into this role, it will be interesting to observe how his international experience translates into addressing Wellington’s unique challenges and opportunities.
The Wellington community eagerly anticipates this new chapter under Mr. Prosser’s leadership. It is my hope that his tenure not only meets but exceeds expectations, further elevating the vibrant and dynamic character of our city.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts on this pivotal development for Wellington.
Sincerely,
James Carter
