To the Editor of Wellington Live,
I am writing regarding the Civic Trust’s recent efforts to save the City to Sea Bridge through a judicial review. The decision by Wellington City Council to demolish such an iconic part of the city has understandably stirred strong emotions among residents.
The Bridge is not just a piece of infrastructure; it is a symbol of Wellington’s character and history. The concerns raised by the Civic Trust about the flawed consultation process resonate deeply. Limiting the discussion to two demolition options disregards the broader perspectives and creative solutions that Wellingtonians might bring to the table.
It’s encouraging to see organizations like the Civic Trust and the Wellington Architectural Centre standing up for thoughtful planning and design. Their call to explore alternative options, such as structural strengthening, demonstrates a commitment to preserving Wellington’s unique urban fabric while ensuring safety and functionality.
As someone who values Wellington’s distinct identity, I hope the Council reconsiders its approach and engages in a more inclusive dialogue with the community. This is an opportunity to not only preserve a beloved structure but also to build trust and collaboration between the Council and its citizens.
Sincerely,
Mark Patterson
