Hey there,
We’ve got some updates from the Wellington City Council about water services, and we want to know what you think! Basically, we’re looking at three options for how drinking, waste, and stormwater services will work in the future. Here’s what we’re thinking: Team up with other councils: A regional three-waters council-controlled organization (CCO) with Hutt City, Porirua City, and Greater Wellington Regional councils. Go it alone: Wellington City Council-only three-waters CCO. Stick to the usual: Council owns the water stuff, and services stay contracted out. The first option (a regional CCO) is our top pick—it’s also backed by local iwi. Mayor Tory Whanau summed it up: “Water infrastructure is a big deal for us. By joining forces with other councils, we can deliver better, fairer, and more sustainable water services, tackle issues together, and get more done with the resources we have. “Of course, it’s important to give Wellingtonians a say and consider all the options.” We’ll be running consultations from 20 March to 20 April 2024, so you’ll have your chance to weigh in. After that, we’ll make a final decision, and by 3 September 2024, we’ll send our plan to the Department of Internal Affairs. The Local Water Done Well legislation is all about fixing New Zealand’s water infrastructure challenges and giving communities more of a say in how things are done. So, what do you think? Keep an eye out for the consultation—this is your shot to help shape the future of water in Wellington!
Cheers,
Matt Johnson
