What makes someone passionate about organizing cultural festivals and serving the community? How does one balance charity, work, and vibrant event planning? These were just a few of the questions that made the latest episode of HOTLINE engaging and insightful. Hosted by Sean Rush and Sara Jane Seddon, the show welcomed Gurpreet Dhillon, a dynamic figure in Wellington’s Indian community, to share his story.
What’s so special about Hutt Valley Diwali?
Kicking off the interview, Gurpreet spoke with enthusiasm about the upcoming Hutt Valley Diwali Festival. Scheduled for October 20th at the Indian Cultural Centre in Petone, this annual festival is quickly becoming a cornerstone event in the Hutt Valley’s cultural calendar. But what makes it stand out?
Gurpreet emphasized that this Diwali isn’t just about lights and sweets; it’s a celebration of unity and diversity. With performances ranging from hip-hop, Bollywood dance, Bhangra, and much more, the event promises a feast for the senses. Whether you’re drawn in by the delicious food or the colorful dances, there’s something for everyone, and best of all — it’s free! This exciting community festival draws people from all walks of life to celebrate the Festival of Lights in a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
How does Gurpreet balance community service and work?
But beyond the festival, Gurpreet shared his dedication to community service through his charity work. “How do you manage it all?” asked Sean Rush. Gurpreet smiled, explaining that his passion for helping others drives him forward. His charity organization, founded in 2019, focuses on initiatives like blood drives, food donations, and sports fundraisers, all aiming to make a real impact in the local community.
Interestingly, Gurpreet’s day job as a driver gives him a unique advantage. “I meet different people every day, hear their stories, and it inspires me,” he said. But did you know Gurpreet holds a graduate diploma in IT? He’s also spent time as a radio presenter, further enriching his skillset and passion for connecting with people.
What can we expect from the upcoming Diwali celebration?
Gurpreet excitedly explained that the festival would include a variety of performances, from traditional Indian dances like Gita and Bhangra to contemporary Bollywood and even hip-hop acts. It’s more than just a cultural event; it’s a moment of unity and celebration for the whole Hutt Valley community.
As the interview wrapped up, both Sean and Sara Jane encouraged Wellingtonians to join in the festivities and take part in what promises to be a spectacular night. With local MPs Chris Bishop and Campbell Barry invited, this Diwali could be the best yet.
What’s next for Gurpreet?
With so many achievements already under his belt, it’s no surprise that Gurpreet has even more in store for the future. When asked what drives him, Gurpreet’s answer was simple: “It’s all about giving back and creating something memorable for everyone to enjoy.”
