Ross Taylor – A Cricket Legend from Wellington
A Historic Moment for Wellington
Ross Taylor, one of New Zealand’s greatest cricketers, gave Wellington an unforgettable moment in the 2019 ICC World Test Championship final. He hit the winning boundary, securing New Zealand’s historic victory against India. This moment will forever be remembered in Wellington’s cricketing history.

Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born in Lower Hutt, Wellington, on March 8, 1984, Taylor’s cricket journey started in his hometown. Of Samoan descent, he made his ODI debut in 2006 and soon became a key player for New Zealand. His consistency and leadership led him to captaincy, guiding the team to several crucial victories. With 19 Test centuries and 21 ODI centuries, he remains New Zealand’s top run-scorer in both formats. His brilliant knock of 290 against Australia at the WACA in 2015 is still one of the finest performances by a Kiwi batsman.
Representing Wellington with Pride
Wellington is proud to call Ross Taylor one of its own. His dedication and achievements have put our city on the global cricketing map. He played a key role in both the 2015 and 2019 World Cup finals and became the first player ever to play 100 matches in all three formats.
Beyond International Cricket
Even in county and franchise cricket, Taylor represented Wellington with pride. Whether playing for Nottinghamshire or in the IPL, he always carried the spirit of our city. His retirement in 2021 marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire young cricketers in Wellington and beyond.
