In the realm where fashion meets philanthropy, one woman has emerged as a guiding light of compassion and style. Deborah Stace, a fervent lover of vintage fashion, has transformed her passion into a charitable endeavour that resonates with animal lovers and fashion enthusiasts alike. Through her online vintage store, @fortunelanevintage, Deborah has not only connected New Zealanders to stunning vintage pieces but also raised over $10,000 in support of HUHA (Helping You Help Animals), an animal charity dedicated to providing a second chance at life for animals in need.

Helping You Help Animals (HUHA) is a Wellington-based animal charity on a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned, injured, and abused animals. Founded in 2008, HUHA embodies a vision of creating a more compassionate society where animals are given the care and love they deserve. With a focus on grassroots initiatives and driven by a dedicated team of volunteers, HUHA operates on a minimal budget but maximizes its impact through hands-on involvement.
Deborah’s affinity for vintage fashion stretches back to her earliest memories. “I’ve always been into vintage fashion, and back in the day, I didn’t even know the things I was buying were vintage—I just naturally gravitated towards them,” she recalls. Since the age of 17, Deborah has been an avid op-shopper, consistently unearthing hidden treasures from second-hand stores. Her unique finds attracted attention and inquiries, showcasing her “good eye” for spotting truly unique pieces.

Around five years ago, Deborah felt an unyielding desire to give back to her community, with animals holding a special place in her heart. Reflecting on her decision to fundraise for HUHA, she shares, “I love animals, but I’m a bit of a baby when it comes to seeing them hurt. I thought, maybe if I fundraised for them instead, that would help the people who are more capable.” It was this intersection of love for animals and the passion to make a difference that led Deborah to choose HUHA as the perfect partner for her philanthropic vision.
Establishing her first Instagram page, @fortunelanevintage, in 2018 solely for HUHA fundraising efforts, Deborah’s vintage clothing journey began in earnest. The lockdown period provided an opportunity for collaboration with her sister Teina, resulting in the creation of @everydayvintagenz, where their shared passion for vintage clothing and op-shopping flourished. In the pairs continued quest for exceptional fashion, Deborah and Teina discovered a wealth of remarkable menswear during their shopping expeditions. This led to their launch of @itsretroman, a platform tailored to the needs of male customers dissatisfied with the current market offerings. As her business expanded, Deborah ventured into consignment sales, market stalls, and further fundraising collaborations with Women’s Refuge.

While @fortunelanevintage initially started as a side venture alongside her full-time job, Deborah soon realized the time and effort it demanded. “I’ve always worked full time. It was a side business, but it actually took a lot of time,” she confesses. Behind the scenes, she diligently tackles various tasks, including washing, ironing, mending, de-pilling, photographing, writing descriptions, and packaging the vintage pieces she sources. Despite the workload, Deborah’s passion shines through as she manages multiple Instagram pages, dedicating numerous days a week to ensure the success of her business and fundraising endeavours.

Surpassing her initial goal of raising $10,000, Deborah’s journey with HUHA is far from over. Committed to continuing her efforts to support those in need, she affirms, “I’m still very passionate about doing things to give back, and I think all my future endeavours will consider that.” With a heart that beats for both style and compassion, Deborah’s ultimate dream is to open a vintage store in Wellington alongside her sister Teina, further cementing her impact on the community.
Deborah Stace’s inspiring efforts and unwavering dedication epitomize the profound impact that can be achieved when passion and empathy intertwine. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can yield extraordinary outcomes. As Deborah reflects on her achievements, she concludes, “I am really proud. $10,000 is a significant amount of money. It has taken a lot of time, but I’m genuinely pleased.” In a world where fashion meets philanthropy, Deborah Stace is a true force of goodwill, inspiring us all to embrace our passions and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
