Wellington Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) is set for a $40 million upgrade. Health Minister Simeon Brown and Finance Minister Nicola Willis announced the project as part of the Government’s nationwide push to modernise hospitals.

What’s Changing?

Wellington’s ED has been struggling with long wait times and aging infrastructure. This upgrade will boost treatment spaces from 53 to 87, adding 34 new spaces and 36 new inpatient beds. There will also be 36 new outpatient consult and treatment spaces to help manage patient flow and follow-up care.

Why It Matters

The Health Quality & Safety Commission reports that Wellington’s ED patients waited an average of four hours in 2022—well above the national average of 2.5 hours. This project aims to cut wait times, create more comfortable and private treatment areas, and provide a better environment for healthcare workers.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis praised hospital staff and shared her personal experience. “I’ve been cared for here, and my family has been cared for here,” she said. “I’m confident they’ll continue to deliver outstanding care in these new facilities.”

For Wellingtonians, this means faster and better emergency care. It also aims to keep talented nurses and doctors by giving them a better place to work.

Looking Ahead

The ED upgrade has already begun. The ICU expansion is due to be finished by 2027, with the new ED opening by 2029. This is part of a wider plan to modernise hospitals across New Zealand and meet the needs of growing communities.
