Welcome to our top 6 list of Wellington’s best hidden bars, where secrets are shared in whispers and unforgettable experiences await behind discreet doors.
In this guide, we’ll uncover these hidden gems, each offering a unique and captivating atmosphere. From the timeless elegance of Hawthorn Lounge to the intimate charm of Night Flower, the swashbuckling adventure at R Bar, the discreet allure of Havana Bar, and the artful sophistication of Lola Rouge, these hidden bars promise unforgettable evenings filled with mystery, exceptional cocktails, and hidden delights.
Hawthorn Lounge
Nestled on Tory Street, behind a mysteriously black door and a set of stairs, you’ll find Hawthorn Lounge. It’s an elevated and intimate speakeasy, perfect for cocktail connoisseurs. The hosts are dressed in classic 1940’s art deco attire, and the moody atmosphere immerses you in an authentic Vintage environment.
Night Flower
Night Flower Punch Lounge on Ghuznee Street is another great spot for those looking to elevate their night out. Located one floor below Ascot, this place is perfect for a romantic date night. Candlelit tables and attentive, yet unobtrusive waitstaff created a very cozy atmosphere. Night Flower is perhaps the most discreet of the hidden bars on our list, tucked behind an unassuming door. What sets it apart is their no-menu concept, where cocktails are crafted based on customers’ flavor preferences and taste requests.
CGR Merchant & Co
CGR Merchant & Co, nestled on Courtenay Place, offers the perfect vantage point for people-watching and stands as one of the more accessible gems on our list of hidden bars. A short flight of stairs up Courtenay Place, Merchant is a delightful choice for an intimate night out, all while being within arm’s reach of the city’s bustling energy. What sets this place apart is its eccentric and lavish selection of infused gins and rums, inviting patrons to embark on tasting adventures with their innovative paddles.
R Bar
R Bar is our go-to spot for a nightcap. Situated next to Ivy on Cuba Street and hidden down a flight of stairs, this pirate-themed venue offers a truly fun experience. Immaculate vibes and spot-on interior furnishings set the tone. Specializing in rum and rum-based cocktails, they boast an impressive selection of drinks, including the Skull Punch cocktail that ignites with cinnamon embers! A notable mention goes to the wonderfully chaotic birthday party we attended at R Bar – it’s an excellent and affordable venue to rent.
Havana Bar
While not conventionally hidden, Havana Bar is discreetly tucked off the CBD’s main strip on Wigan Street, opposite the Lighthouse Cinema. Havana Bar isn’t a place you’d stumble upon on a casual night out, and that’s precisely what makes it special. It’s an intimate venue with meticulous attention to detail and a delightful menu if you’re looking for a snack. With its relaxed, Latin vibe and live music twice a week, Havana Bar is a hidden gem.
Lola Rouge
Lola Rouge is the cocktail bar attached to Naumi Hotel. While it doesn’t require a geographical wizard to locate, it’s a spot often overlooked in Wellington’s hospo scene. The interiors are lush and elevated, a dream for art lovers. I can only imagine the cost Naumi incurred to furnish this place – it’s absolutely stunning. Their attention to detail in both the meals and cocktails matches the intricacies of the environment, making it an all-around great experience.
