Lucas Robins: Wellington’s Young Swim Star Making Waves
NZ Record Holder and Youth Tri-Series Star
Credit to Lucas Robins, Wellington’s own para-swimming sensation. At just 14, he set the benchmark in the NZ U16 S10 200m Butterfly Long Course (50m pool). Not only that—he’s been selected for the New Zealand Youth Tri-Series squad. In October, he’ll compete against top athletes from Australia. A proud moment for him, for New Zealand, and especially for Wellington.
From Waikanae Beach to National Glory
Lucas was born with fibular hemimelia and fitted with his first prosthetic at 10 months. At 3, he had a Van Ness Rotationplasty, which created a functional knee joint. He lives near Waikanae Beach, just outside Wellington, and carries the city’s spirit wherever he goes.
He found his love for swimming at the 2021 Halberg Games. Afterward, Dannevirke formed a small para-swim team, where Lucas trained for three years. Today, he’s part of the Ōtaki Titans, having transferred only a month ago.
Lucas trains hard—two to three hours daily. Morning and evening. That’s true commitment.
Powered by Technology and Passion
To boost his performance, Lucas uses a 3D-printed swimming leg, custom-built by the Wellington Limb Centre. This innovation has been life-changing. It proves how Wellington supports its young talents—not just with words but with action.
His bronze in the 50m butterfly at the National Age Group Champs helped him earn a place on the Tri-Series team. It’s his favorite stroke and part of his S10 classification. He’s also qualified for the NZ Short Course Champs.
A Proud Moment for Wellington
We’re beyond proud of Lucas and all he’s done for our country. He represents Wellington with strength, courage, and grace. Through every challenge, he rises. Through every swim, he inspires.
His journey is more than medals—it’s about breaking barriers, chasing dreams, and lifting others with him.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Lucas has also represented his school in cross country and athletics. He’s more than an athlete—he’s a leader. His story shows young Wellingtonians what’s possible with heart and hustle.
Let’s celebrate Lucas Robins, a true gem of Wellington, as he dives into a bright future.
