Tonia Haskell: Wellington’s Water Wonder Woman
The Headline-Maker
Tonia Haskell grabbed headlines when she led Wellington Water through one of its toughest financial challenges. Under her command, the capital investment surged from $60 million to an impressive $330 million in just a year. Although a budgeting error led to her stepping down in 2024, her leadership through that critical phase remains unmatched in Wellington’s recent history.
From Local Roots to Local Leadership
Born and raised in Wellington, Tonia has always called the capital home. Her deep connection to the city shaped her vision and leadership. She joined Wellington Water in 2019 as Group Manager for Network Development. With years of experience behind her, she quickly moved up the ranks.
In January 2023, she became Acting Chief Executive. By May, she took on the role permanently. Every step she took showed her drive to make Wellington’s water infrastructure stronger, smarter, and more sustainable.
Building More Than Pipelines
Tonia didn’t just manage systems—she built trust. She oversaw key projects like the Kaitoke Flume Bridge and the Omāroro Reservoir. These projects weren’t just about pipes and pumps. They were about preparing Wellington for a better future.
Her work improved how we deliver water and handle wastewater across the region. She focused on community needs and created partnerships to tackle long-standing problems. Under her watch, the team delivered results that truly mattered.
A Wellington Hero
We’re incredibly proud of Tonia’s dedication. Her years of service reflect her deep love for Wellington and its people. She showed courage during tough times and left a legacy of growth and resilience.
Even after stepping down, her work continues to benefit the city. She remains a powerful example of strong leadership and community-driven service.
Tonia Haskell may have exited the boardroom, but her impact on Wellington flows on—just like the water she worked so hard to protect.
