What! The New World at the Railway Station has closed….why?

Video: What do we think about the closure of New World?

What! The New World at the Railway Station has closed….why.

New World Metro in Wellington’s central railway station closed its doors for the final time on Saturday.

The property is leased and was up for renewal in June 2024, but despite both parties’ best efforts, and many months of negotiations, Foodstuffs North Island and the landlord, KiwiRail hadn’t been able to reach a viable agreement.

Since the decision was signalled last year, Foodstuffs top priority has been to do the right thing by our team and they are pleased to say most staff have got roles at the seven other New World’s in the city.

Foodstuffs would like to say a very big thank you to our team, suppliers and customers for all your incredible support of New World Railway over the years.

Meanwhile Kiwirail is putting some food truck in place for 6 months while negotiating with potential tenants for the supermarket space.

Here’s a taste of what’s in store

The Greek Food Truck

Nada Bakery

Hong Kong Foodie

Be Rude Not To Welly – Gluten Free Food Truck

Shouk NZ

Kosmos Coffee

It hasn’t all gone down well though with comments like this on the Wellington City Council Facebook post

Steve Lladner says

“I mean, appreciate the effort, but food trucks in no way compensate for the loss of the supermarket.”

Dennis Goodman says

“The supermarket shouldn’t be closing. It’s a high demand metro-supermarket and, quite frankly, l’ve nothing but contempt for how Kiwirail handled the situation which has led to the supermarket closing. You put your selfish, corporate interests ahead of those of your own customers who extensively shop at that New World.”
