Ian, a passionate organizer, shares insights about his involvement in charity events. It all started in 1998 when Ian worked with Ronald McDonald House. With the support of Mark McGuinness, he launched the first Champions charity lunch in an old, derelict shed. Since then, the event has supported seven charities and 20 community groups, raising close to $7.5 million. Ian attributes this success to the sponsors and guests who make the event happen, calling it the “Champions family.”
Reflecting on the challenges of organizing the event, Ian admits it has gotten easier over the years as sponsors and guests eagerly return. Despite occasional setbacks, the generosity of the community always shines through. In 2023, the event surpassed 1,000 attendees for the first time, filling the Tekina Conference Centre.
Ian acknowledges the emotional aspect of his work, especially when speaking about the generous support from the community. He expresses gratitude for everyone who contributes to the cause of the Champions charity lunch. The event is set to return in 2025, supporting Lifeline Trust, and Ian encourages people to secure their tables early.
In a lighter moment, Ian reveals that Monsoon Poon is his favorite restaurant in Wellington, and he enjoys visiting Island Bay, where his wife is from. He wraps up the interview with a joke about his golf handicap, bringing a humorous close to the conversation.
