Tory Whanau’s business advisory group: Mark McGuinness and Justin McKenzie resign
To the Editor of Wellington Live,
I am writing regarding the recent changes within Mayor Tory Whanau’s business advisory group. The resignations of Mark McGuinness and Justin McKenzie are concerning, as these individuals brought valuable experience and insights to the table.
It is disappointing to hear McKenzie’s comments about the lack of progress and the council’s reluctance to actively engage with the group’s input. His experience highlights a critical issue: the need for streamlined and effective decision-making processes within council operations. As a business owner struggling with the challenges in Courtenay Place, his perspective should have been a priority in shaping solutions for the area’s revitalization.
McGuinness, with his extensive contributions to Wellington’s development, is another significant loss for the group. His expertise in transforming spaces like Chews Lane and the waterfront has been instrumental in shaping the city’s identity. Losing his voice means the group and the city miss out on a wealth of knowledge that could have driven impactful projects forward.
While it’s encouraging to hear Mayor Whanau’s commitment to recruiting new members and focusing on revitalizing the city center and building creative and tech sectors, it’s crucial that the new members feel their contributions are valued and actionable. Otherwise, these resignations may just be the beginning of a larger trend.
Wellington’s challenges require a collaborative approach where all stakeholders—business leaders, council officials, and residents—work together effectively. I hope the council can address these concerns and create a more productive environment moving forward.
Sincerely,
Edward Nolan
