Wellington is set to receive a major boost to its surgical capacity, with Health New Zealand approving $16.25 million for a new state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre at Wellington Regional Hospital.
Health Minister Simeon Brown says the investment marks a “significant milestone” in delivering world-class healthcare closer to home.
A Major Upgrade for Complex Surgery
A hybrid operating theatre combines advanced imaging technology with a traditional operating room. Allowing specialists from multiple disciplines to work together in one space. This setup enables clinicians to perform complex procedures. Including trauma surgery, vascular operations, and interventional radiology — without having to move patients between different suites.
Brown says the upgrade will directly address a current bottleneck in the system.
“Right now, patients in Wellington are being transferred between operating theatres and interventional suites, which can create delays and extend recovery times,” he said.
“The new hybrid theatre provides a single, seamless environment that supports faster, safer, and more efficient care.”
Faster Treatment, Better Recovery
By consolidating surgical and imaging services into one location, the hospital will be able to:
- Increase its overall surgical output
- Reduce wait times for urgent and elective procedures
- Lower the risks associated with moving critically ill patients
- Improve recovery times by reducing the need for multiple procedures in separate rooms
The new theatre will also reduce duplication and streamline clinical workflows. Giving medical teams access to the tools and technology they need to operate at their best.
Strengthening the Health System
Brown emphasised that projects like this are essential for easing pressure on New Zealand’s health system.
“This investment strengthens healthcare delivery across the region.
We are committed to providing modern, fit-for-purpose facilities so New Zealanders can access world-class surgical care right here in Wellington.”
The hybrid theatre is expected to play a key role. Making Wellington Regional Hospital more resilient and better equipped to handle growing surgical demand — now and in the future.
