A 200-car burnout gathering in Levin turned violent Sunday night, leaving two police officers injured and multiple arrests made.
Around 30 police officers, deployed pre-emptively, were “put at serious risk due to the aggressive behavior” of many involved, Manawatu Area Commander Inspector Ross Grantham said.
The chaos unfolded as the large gathering on Bath St around 8 pm descended into a series of burnouts at the intersection of Queen Street and State Highway 57. Attempts by police to intervene were met with resistance, with patrol cars being kicked and pelted with bottles.
The group then moved to Otaki and back to Levin, continuing their dangerous antics. As the night progressed, the violence escalated. Police were forced to retreat under a shower of rocks, bricks, and bottles, resulting in injuries to two officers.
Two arrests were made. One individual, allegedly wearing a stab-proof vest and carrying a large knife, was arrested for disorderly behavior. Another, found with a flick-knife, was arrested for obstruction. The presence of weapons raised concerns that the crowd included individuals intent on causing harm.
Despite the challenges, police impounded six cars and are investigating the incident using footage and information gathered at the scene.
The Levin incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for violence at such gatherings, underscoring the need for vigilance and preparation to ensure public safety.
