🌿 Middle-earth Is Coming Home

Kiwis, dust off your elven cloaks — Middle-earth is making its big return to Aotearoa.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be shot right here in New Zealand, with a global release date locked in for 17 December, 2027. After years away, the magical world of Tolkien is once again calling our backyard home.

🎭 Andy Serkis Returns — as Gollum and Director

The one and only Andy Serkis is back in the role that made “my precious” a household phrase — and this time, he’s also sitting in the director’s chair.

“We’ll be shooting early to mid next year,” Serkis told Collider. “I’m incredibly excited to go back and work with my friends and family in New Zealand.”

Sounds like Gollum’s packing his bags for another adventure through the stunning hills, forests, and fjords of Aotearoa.

🎬 Sir Peter Jackson Passes the Baton (But Sticks Around)

In a bit of a shake-up, this will be the first live-action LOTR film not directed by Wellington’s own Sir Peter Jackson. But he’s far from out of the picture.

Sir Pete, along with Dame Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will be producing the film and guiding the story every step of the way, making sure the vibes stay true to the trilogy we all know and love.

🛠️ Wētā FX On Board — Of Course

You can’t have Middle-earth without the wizards behind the scenes. Wētā FX is back in the mix, promising the same jaw-dropping effects that brought orcs, dragons, and epic battles to life in the original films.

There’s more to be revealed soon, with pre-production just kicking off.

💰 Big Bucks, Big Screen

This one’s shaping up to be one of the biggest productions ever filmed in NZ — and that’s saying something. Warner Bros. hasn’t commented yet on how overseas politics (like US tariffs) might affect things, but here at home, we’re ready to roll out the red carpet.

The NZ Film Commission says it hasn’t received a screen rebate application yet — but give it time. The mountains of Middle-earth don’t build themselves.

🧝‍♂️ First Live-Action LOTR Since 2014

It’s been a long time between lembas — The Hunt for Gollum will be the first live-action Lord of the Rings film since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies wrapped up back in 2014.

Amazon’s The Rings of Power gave us a taste more recently (filmed in NZ, then shifted to the UK), but nothing hits quite like the big screen magic made right here in Aotearoa.
