Wellington has once again shown its heart after a major fire tore through the Urban Retreat spa and Mall Dry Cleaners on Tory Street last Monday, the 20th of October, at around 9.15pm.
Within seven minutes, local fire crews were on scene, breaking in to bring the blaze under control.
The fire caused significant damage to the upstairs Urban Retreat business but, thankfully, did not destroy the main structure of the building.
The businesses are owned by Mike, a well-known Wellington dry cleaner who has served the community for over 30 years.
At one point, Mike operated 22 stores across the region. After the challenges of COVID-19, he had to rationalise down to 11, but his reputation for hard work and local loyalty has never wavered.
The fire began in a dryer downstairs and quickly spread upward. It was an extremely windy night, and the gusts fuelled the flames, making them spread faster than usual.
Despite the chaos, the firefighters managed to contain it swiftly, preventing further loss.
In the aftermath, Mike expressed deep gratitude to the Wellington community. He said the support had been overwhelming, describing the city as “such a beautiful, wonderful place.”
Within hours, friends, customers, and neighbours arrived with food, presents, blankets, and moral support. The outpouring of kindness reminded everyone why Wellington is known for its strong community spirit.
Mike also praised his insurance partners. He spoke highly of Gareth Knight from Affiliated Insurance and the team from Vero, saying their service was “absolutely fantastic.”
According to Mike, he had “purchased almost the exact right insurance,” after paying premiums for 20 years. He said the customer service was “stunning” and that the quick action from the loss adjuster—who arrived on site on day one—helped him get moving immediately.
Known for his energy and entrepreneurial drive, Mike didn’t waste a moment. He quickly pulled together a team to clear out the fire-damaged upstairs area and start rebuilding.
His goal was ambitious—he hoped to reopen by the 8th of November, calling it “mission impossible,” but his determination was clear.
Amazingly, the downstairs dry cleaning business reopened the very next day after the fire.
The Urban Retreat spa, famous for its herbal massages, sauna, red spa, and plunge pool, has long been a favourite for Wellington locals looking to relax and recharge.
Many loyal customers have been checking in, excited to see the business return to life.
This event has also highlighted how Wellington’s systems—fire services, insurance providers, and local business networks—can work together effectively in a crisis.
The collaboration between corporate and community efforts has made a big difference in helping Mike rebuild.
The fire was a setback, but it also revealed something greater: the strength of Wellington’s people. In times of loss, the city doesn’t hesitate to lift one of its own.
From emergency responders to everyday citizens, everyone played a part in keeping this small business owner on his feet.
Mike summed it up best when he said, “Wellington rose up.” His words captured the spirit of a city that doesn’t back down in the face of challenge. Instead, it comes together—fast, fierce, and full of heart.
As the cleanup continues and the rebuild begins, the story of the Tory Street fire has become more than a tale of damage and repair. It’s a reminder of the resilience, community, and kindness that define Wellington.
