A much-loved Wellington beach is at the centre of community concern. With locals claiming it has “lost its sand” — and its charm. Following recent works on the sea wall and surrounding infrastructure.
Residents say Hataitai Beach, a small but iconic swimming spot cherished by generations of Wellingtonians, has been left in a damaged state after this year’s coastal works.
Local resident and Friends of Hataitai Beach member, Susette Goldsmith, says the beach has dramatically changed in recent months.
“We’ve lost so much sand — it’s not the beach it used to be,” Goldsmith said. “The community just wants to see it restored to its previous state. It’s a special place for locals, families, and kids learning to swim.”
According to residents, the beach’s once-soft sandy shoreline has been replaced by exposed rocks and a steep drop-off. Making it less accessible and less safe for swimmers. They believe that repair and strengthening work on nearby sea and retaining walls may have altered natural sediment movement, leading to erosion.
Locals are now calling on the Wellington City Council to act quickly. Either by replenishing the sand or reviewing the engineering impacts of the recent works.
“It’s heartbreaking to see such a beloved community space deteriorate like this,” another resident said. “We just want the beach back the way it was.”
Wellington Live understands that council engineers are aware of the community’s concerns and are assessing potential next steps.
For many Wellingtonians, Hataitai Beach represents more than just a place to swim . It’s a social hub, a training ground, and a reminder of the capital’s close connection to the sea.
As summer approaches, locals hope this “disappearing beach” can be saved before another season of tides washes more of it away. 🌊
