How the Umbrella Awards Began
The Umbrella Awards were born from a simple, heartfelt gesture by founder Graham “Bloxi” Bloxham. During a meeting at The Arborist in downtown Wellington to discuss the city’s vision, Bloxi decided to honor his guest of honor, Mark D, with a unique token of appreciation.
With only 10 minutes to prepare, Bloxi grabbed a $15 umbrella from a local store and handwrote “The Wellington Umbrella Awards” above the word “New Zealand.” This impromptu creation symbolized protection, unity, and practicality—qualities that embody the spirit of Wellington.
Symbolism of the Umbrella
The umbrella represents:
- Protection: Shielding us from challenges.
- Universal Usefulness: A practical tool for every occasion.
- Unity: Bringing together smaller groups, agencies, and communities under one vision.
An umbrella also signifies adaptability, much like Wellingtonians’ ability to face life’s storms with resilience and grace.
