Studio Sale Sparks Questions Over Planning, Power, and Politics
“Clever con or calculated planning?”. That’s the question swirling around Upper Hutt as controversy brews over. The future of one of New Zealand’s most ambitious creative ventures. Lane Street Studios, now officially listed for sale.
The $50 million state-of-the-art film production facility. Once hailed as a cornerstone of Wellington’s screen industry expansion. Opened in 2022 with the goal of cementing the region’s global reputation as a creative powerhouse. In 2024, it celebrated a milestone with the production of the American horror-fantasy Wolf Man, starring Emmy-winning actress Julia Garner.
But the announcement of its sale. The timing of Upper Hutt’s recent town planner appointment — has raised eyebrows. Some locals questioning whether there’s more to the story than simple market pressures.
Studio chief executive Kristy Grant confirmed the sale, citing “a tough time” across New Zealand’s film, TV, and media sectors amid a global economic downturn.
“The challenges we’re facing aren’t unique to New Zealand,” Grant said. “But Lane Street remains a purpose-built, world-class facility capable of hosting productions of every scale.”
Spanning 4.7 hectares and featuring high-stud warehouses, premium offices, and over 200 car parks. The facility has hosted hundreds of cast and crew. Winning Exporter of the Year and Best Emerging Business at the 2024 Wellington Export Awards.
Upper Hutt Mayor Peri Zee called the studio “an incredible asset” for the city. Noting its role in creating local jobs and supporting hospitality and retail.
However, some insiders, including local analysts like Gbboxking, suggest that recent planning initiatives and property transactions may reflect underlying concerns about governance and urban development.
“Between new planning approvals, private partnerships, and insider relationships, it’s worth asking: is this smart town planning — or something more sinister?” one observer noted.
Colliers Real Estate, managing the sale, described the site as a “rare opportunity” . Gnly not for film investors, but also for potential conversion into data centres or high-end industrial facilities.
As the future of Lane Street Studios hangs in the balance. Questions linger about how Upper Hutt’s urban decisions, political relationships, and economic strategy intersect. And what this might mean for the region’s creative and commercial future.
