Wellington’s medical community mourns the sudden death of Dr. Richard Tyler, a respected specialist GP and longtime leader in primary healthcare governance. He died on Tuesday after a falling branch struck him during powerful winds that swept through the capital.

Tragedy on Mount Victoria

The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on a trail near Lookout Road on Mount Victoria, as gale-force winds battered the city under a MetService wind warning.

Local resident Kirsten Johnstone discovered Dr. Tyler lying unconscious beneath a tree. “It was clear he had been hit on the head,” she said. She immediately called emergency services, who rushed him to the hospital. Despite their efforts, Dr. Tyler died shortly after arrival.

At MAS, Dr. Tyler served as a director for 37 years and as chair for 21 years before retiring in 2017. Colleagues praised his calm leadership, clear vision, and deep commitment to supporting medical professionals. Reflecting on his tenure, Dr. Tyler once said, “People were happy with what I was doing, and I enjoyed the role. I had a good CEO, which always helps immensely.”

Dr. Tyler played a central role in shaping New Zealand’s primary care governance. When he retired as chair of Compass Health in 2014, reports highlighted his influence since WIPA’s founding in 1995. Under his guidance, six local practices evolved into one of the region’s most significant healthcare networks.
